The Refugee Crisis In Europe

by Olivier Brückner, October 12th, 2020

On September 9th, 2020, the refugee camp Moria on the island Lesbos, Greece, burnt down. About 12,600 refugees lost their shelter (Stevis-Gridneff 2020).

Especially since 2015 (Spindler 2015), a lot of people are seeking asylum in Europe (Kirchofer et al. 2015), yet the economical Union utilizes its political power to create an inequality in the distribution of the responsibility. A continuously rising conflict, dividing the society, which puts the continuity of the European Union at risk.

This map intends to display the distribution of refugees (The World Bank 2020), trying to extrapolate the current situation to 2025, as well as visualizing a distribution that meets the EU’s communicated values better by taking each country’s wealth into account (The World Bank 2020).

Key

The size represents the population

The color inidcates the % of refugees relative to the population

Usage

The right arrow key increases the year

The left arrow key decreases the year

D

The D key toggles between the distributions

Calculation — Adjusted Distribution

Refugees per Country = Total Number of Refugees × GDP ÷ Total GDP

Calculation — Estimation 2025

GDP = GDP in 2019 × Average GDP Growth of Country ^ 6 Years

Population = Population in 2019 × Population Growth of Country in 2019 ^ 6 Years

Refugees = Number of Refugees in 2019 × approx. Average Growth of Asylum Allocation ^ 6 Years
